Rio Olympics table as it stands

Image
Predictably, the US is running away with this one having garnered a total of 75 medals to top the table. While first place is not in dispute, the battle for second place rages on between Britain and China with 41 and 46 medals respectively. Britain tops China by virtue of having one more gold medal than the Asian country's 15. Kenya is the highest ranked African country on the list with five medals, South Africa has seven medal but only one gold compared to Kenya's two. Estonia, Krygystan, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and the UAE all bring up the rear with one bronze medal each. Nigeria is yet to win a medal at the tournament and as such, doesn't make the list.

Justin Bieber deletes Instagram account

Image
In the 1970s, an angry, maligned rock star would throw his television out of his hotel window, but Justin Bieber has gone for the millennial-style nuclear option — deleting his Instagram account. The baby-faced Canadian musician, 22, committed online hara-kiri after becoming upset by a barrage of negative comments about his new friendship with Sofia Richie. The pair have been pictured stepping out together several times in recent weeks, amid a frenzy of rumors linking them romantically. Reacting to insults posted by fans alongside pictures of the 17-year-old model — singer Lionel Richie’s daughter — Bieber told his 77 million followers: “I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate. “This is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.” But the millionaire singer appears to have gone a step further, as clicking on links to his Instagram page now yields an error message. Following a successful first season during which he won the Champions League, he has agreed improved contract terms with the club.  Zidane’s new contract will seem him earn €5.5m a season which translates to £90,000-a-week.  Zidane guided Real Madrid to their second Champions League in the last three years in May when they beat Atletico Madrid in Milan.

Cristiano Ronaldo appears to hit out at Jose Mourinho after Mourinho criticizes him on Portuguese TV

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared to hit back at compatriot and former coach Jose Mourinho with a cryptic Instagram post after Mourinho criticized Ronaldo's touch line behavior during the EURO 2016 final. Ronaldo was stretchered out of the field in the first half due to a knee injury in the match and came out in the final minutes of extra time to bark instructions at his teammates- to inspire them to hold on to their 1-0 lead. But Mourinho , who weeks ago claimed Ronaldo wasn't in his top three players of all time , criticized Ronaldo , saying his touch line antics didn't do his team any favors at all. 'Ronaldo didn't help in any way by doing that in the final few minutes of the Euros final,' the United manager told Portugal's SporTV. There were 11 players on the pitch doing their job, and the person in charge of directing them was the coach. ‘I saw it as an overload of emotion from someone who saw that the team was just minutes away from achieving an ob

French Gymnast breaks his leg during training at the 2016 Rio Olympics (Graphic photos and video) A French gymnast, 26 year old Samir Ait Said broke his leg and the sound of the leg snapping was audible from down on the floor to up in the rafters. The next sound was a collective gasp from the crowd, then a groan, then silence. Said collapsed after he landed and broke his leg during a vault training on Saturday, his left tibia broke on impact and his leg twisted grotesquely away from his thigh. After he landed, he grabbed his leg and covered his face with his right hand while trainers surrounded him for several minutes. A wheelchair was rolled out to the side of the mat where he lay but he couldn't use any of those items, he was strapped to a stretcher and carried off as sympathetic fans cheered. French coach Denis Charlieux said that Said had been taken to the hospital and that they were waiting for further information from doctors. He called the day “a nightmare.” He

Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid team-mate Gareth Bale headlined a 10-man shortlist announced on Monday for the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award. Ronaldo struck the winning spot-kick as Real claimed an 11th Champions League title, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties in May, before leading his country to Euro 2016 glory. Fellow Portugal and Real team-mate Pepe also features on the shortlist along with Wales star Bale, who steered his country to the semi-finals of the European Championship in their first appearance at a major finals since 1958. Ronaldo is favourite to the win the award for a second time, after scooping the honours in 2013-14, which would see him draw level with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann was also nominated after his six goals at Euro 2016 earned him the player of the tournament and the Golden Boot, only for France to fall short against Portugal in the final. Messi was one of two Barcelona players to make the l

Antonio Conte needs time to make mark on Chelsea – Michael Emenalo

Image
Antonio Conte will need time to make his mark on Chelsea and turn an underachieving squad into winners again, according to technical director Michael Emenalo. The Italian’s reign got off to an underwhelming start on Saturday as Chelsea suffered a 2-0 defeat to Rapid Vienna at Allianz Stadion, with Emenalo and owner Roman Abramovich both in attendance. Chelsea flew from Vienna to the southern Austrian town of Velden on Sunday to begin a week-long training camp that will include another friendly against WAC RZ Pellets on July 20, before travelling to the United States to participate in the International Champions Cup at the end of the month. Many of the players granted extended leave after participating in Euro 2016 and the Copa America Centenario are expected to be available to Conte by the time he makes the trip across the Atlantic, and Emenalo has warned that patience will be required while Chelsea’s new coach communicates his ideas to his players. “The only thing that is
