Philippines hails Buhari’s anti-corruption war

The Philippines has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft war, promising to assist Nigeria in every way possible.
The Charge d’Affaires, Embassy of the Philippines, Mr. Jose Cabrera III, said this during an interview with our correspondent shortly after the Independence Day celebration of the Philippines.
He said, “The Philippines and Nigeria share common ground on many of these issues and concerns: Security, social development and economic advancement are areas where partnership and cooperation have the greatest potential.
“The Philippines supports the Nigerian government’s efforts at eradicating corruption, diversifying its economy, diversifying its economy and terrorism.
“The Philippines also recognises the important role of Nigeria in the West African region and the African continent as well as its importance and potential as an emerging economy.”
The envoy said since Nigeria and the Philippines established bilateral, diplomatic and trade relations in August 1962, the two nations had continued to enjoy a cordial relationship.
Cabrera said over 8,000 Nigerians were living in the Philippines, most of whom were students, adding that they were enjoying the warm atmosphere of the host nation.
He added, “I don’t know the exact number of Nigerians there at the moment but the estimates put them at about 8,000. Most of the Nigerians there are students.”
Cabrera lamented the poor trade relations his country had with the government of Nigeria. He, therefore, called for more active steps to be taken by both countries to further strengthen their existing ties and work on other areas beneficiary to the duo.
“I will be having talks with minister of foreign affairs in Nigeria and we will be exploring ways on how to enhance cooperation in a way that both countries can benefit and I am sure there are areas we can work. The level of trade has been low and we will want an increase in that area,” he added.
