Stewart Cink will be taking a leave of absence from the PGA Tour while his wife, Lisa, battles breast cancer.
The six-time PGA Tour winner was scheduled to compete in this week's Wells Fargo Championship but withdrew on Tuesday.
Cink released a statement on Twitter explaining what his family are going trough.
"Last week my wife, Lisa, and I received some unfortunate news. Lisa has been diagnosed with breast cancer - a startling and unexpected revelation for everyone in our family," Cink wrote.
"We are still in the process of figuring out exactly what she is fighting, and the uncertainty continues to be very difficult.
"In order to assist Lisa in meeting this challenge, I will be stepping away from competitive golf until circumstances improve for her. Hopefully that day will come quickly."
Cink, 42, is best known for his 2009 Open Championship victory over Tom Watson.
He also spent over 40 weeks in the top 10 of the rankings from 2004 to 2009.
